Frequently asked questions
How is WPM calculated?
WPM (words per minute) is calculated using the standard definition of a "word" as five characters, including spaces. We count every correctly typed character, divide by 5 to get words, then scale to 60 seconds. This is the most widely used method for typing speed measurement.
What is a good typing speed?
The average adult types between 40 and 60 WPM. If you type above 60 WPM you're above average. Professional typists typically hit 65–75 WPM. Anything above 90 WPM is considered advanced. Competitive typists can exceed 150 WPM, and world records go above 200 WPM.
Does accuracy matter more than speed?
Yes — accuracy always comes before speed when learning. Typing fast with many errors is actually slower in practice because you spend time correcting mistakes. Aim for above 95% accuracy first, then work on increasing speed. Your net WPM (adjusted for errors) is what matters in real work.
How do I improve my typing speed?
The fastest improvements come from: (1) using all ten fingers with correct hand position (home row), (2) not looking at the keyboard, (3) practising daily for 15–20 minutes rather than long occasional sessions, and (4) focusing on accuracy first. Check our Typing Lessons page for structured exercises.
Are my personal bests saved permanently?
Your personal bests are saved in your browser's local storage — they persist across sessions as long as you use the same browser and don't clear your data. They are never sent to our servers, and no account is needed.
